These Web pages were originally developed under the Windows NT operating system and are hosted on UNIX, on a Silicon Graphics platform. I used the following software:
I have yet to find an HTML Editor that I really like. HoTMetaL is fairly hard to use and I got to the point where it was easier to use Emacs to create HTML text, rather than use HoTMetaL. The HTML editor that comes packaged with Netscape Navigator Gold is easier to use, but on Windows NT 3.51 running on a 486DX2-66 it runs like a tree sloth on Quaaludes (which is to say, very slow). Although it is a more powerful and easier to use editor than HoTMetaL, its slowness is really irritating. Further, I could not get it to download my Web pages (I used Windows NT's ftp to do this). If you know of a better HTML editor, please drop me a note and suggest it.
In contrast to the HTML Editors, Paint Shop Pro is a great tool. Its fast and comes with lots of nice image editing and image processing features.
The shareware version of LView Pro I am running was purposely crippled so that it runs slowly (e.g., compiled for the 386 and Windows 3.1). Its main claim to fame is that it allows the transparent layer to be set on a GIF file. This is all I use it for. Paint Shop Pro is a better image processing program. I am using version 3.0 of Paint Shop Pro, which does not support transparent GIF creation. Apparently version 3.11 and later does support this feature.
Over a decade has passed since I originally wrote this web page. I now use a Linux system, which would have been classified as a supercomputer when I wrote this page. I have moved away from anything but image processing tools. My web pages use a simple format and I create them directly in HTML.
I have found tools like Microsoft Frontpage worse than useless. The last time I used it the formatting was so bad that I had to correct it by hand, which was time consuming. I'm sure that there are better tools out there. However, if what you want to do is get web site on-line fast, the easiest course is to hire a professonal. At Bear Products International we recommend Jim Cortez and his company Get a Web Life (www.getaweblife.com).
